The REDCAT poster series was initiated in 2005 by Tamar Fortgang, REDCAT marketing and promotions manager, and Scott Taylor, director of creative services for CalArts, in order to promote CalArts design student involvement in the Institute's performance and gallery space in downtown Los Angeles, and to raise awareness of REDCAT events on campus.
Working with CalArts Design Program faculty member Shelley Stepp (MFA 94), who oversees the student Graphic Design Workshop, a plan was developed to pre-print poster paper with basic information about REDCAT, leaving the student designers free to concentrate on design for specific events.
The great majority of the posters are screenprinted, though several have employed other production methods including blueprinting, spray painting, and various hand techniques. A number of the individual posters have won design awards. In the past six years over 200 posters have been produced for REDCAT, and the series is ongoing.
Coordination and oversight for the series have been provided by Stepp and CalArts Public Affairs Office staff designers Jae-Hyouk Sung (MFA 04), Kate Cardoza Blackwell (MFA 05), Peter Kaplan (MFA 04), and Joseph Prichard (MFA 08), all of whom are CalArts design program alumni.
Initial financial support for the project was provided by Lynn Rosenfeld, CalArts vice-president for special projects, and the CalArts Office of Public Affairs has provided ongoing support. Offset printing has been provided by Curtis 1000 and Stacey Hauge Printing.
